Roots and Raiders
As part of the implementation process, an ambitious and cohesive medium-term planning demonstrating the progression of core knowledge (substantive) and skills (disciplinary) pupils will acquire in their study of History in each year group will be curated. The medium-term plan will feature an overarching enquiry question which will map out the learning journey of pupils including their extended experiences and learning outcomes. The medium-term plan will be translated into child-friendly enquiry questions which will guide the learning journey of the pupils. Impact of this implementation process will include clear and precise triangulation between the medium-term plans, pupils' learning (as seen during learning observations), extended learning experiences and pupils’ books.
History Gets Personal - EYFS
In EYFS, pupils developed their understanding of the past by exploring their own parents’ heritage. As part of this learning, they took part in a Cultural Day, where they celebrated the diverse backgrounds within the school community. Pupils shared stories, traditional dress, food, and customs, and found out about their parents’ unique experiences in British society. This helped them make personal connections to history and begin to understand the richness of the past through real-life experiences.
Bravery Beyond Borders - KS1
Year 2 had an exciting trip to the Florence Nightingale Museum, linked to their learning about significant people in history. Pupils explored how Florence Nightingale helped improve hospitals during the Crimean War and placed key events on a timeline. They also learned about Mary Seacole and how her contributions were just as important, though her experiences were very different from Florence’s. As part of the trip, they visited the statue of Mary Seacole in London, built in her memory, to reflect on her legacy.
Homes in Rome - LKS2
In Year 3, pupils explored the impact of the Roman Empire on Britain as part of their history learning. To deepen their understanding, they visited a Roman villa, where they were able to see first-hand the features of Roman architecture and daily life. The trip provided valuable opportunities to handle artefacts, ask questions, and make connections between what they had learned in the classroom and real historical evidence. This enriched their knowledge of Roman society and helped bring the topic to life.
Raiders and Traders - UKS2
Year 5 developed their understanding of the Vikings by exploring their origins, lifestyle, and impact on Britain. To enhance this learning, pupils took part in a Viking workshop, which offered hands-on experiences such as examining replica artefacts, trying on Viking clothing, and learning about Viking warfare and trade. This immersive experience helped pupils deepen their historical enquiry skills and brought the topic to life, strengthening their understanding of Viking culture and its legacy.
