Zones of Regulation

The work below highlights learning around the ‘community’ from EYFS to Y6.
Children have been developing their understanding of belonging to part of the school community, and beyond, particularly through action and supporting the people around them that contribute positively to society!

Emotions: Inside & Out - EYFS

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) makes up a large part of Nursery learning. As we settle into a new school year, our youngest children have learnt about sharing, listening and taking turns. In reception, children have been introduced to the zones of regulation. In shared talk, they have been taking turns through using shoulder partners.

Regulating We and Me - KS1

PSHE is KS1 has covered a broad range of topics, including class charters, zones of regulation, internet safety and understanding and taking risks. We have found success in timetabling circle time each week on Wednesday morning. This provides a great opportunity for children to listen and respond to important and relevant issues that are often directly related to members of the class. Children are starting to understand and recognise their place within the school community as well as articulate opinion about personal, social and health issues.

Democracy and Debate - LKS2

Children have utilized the zones of regulation to understand how better to control their emotions if there is conflict at school. They have learnt about rights and responsibilities within the school community. This concept of democracy was explored further by Year 4 children by taking class votes and exploring debating within the classroom.

Stereotypes: Lazy and Harmful - UKS2

Year 5 have learnt what stereotypes are and how it is harmful to assume a fixed and oversimplified belief about someone. Discussing generalizations allowed the children to highlight beliefs they perceive as unfair during a richly rewarding circle time. These ideas were linked to their own experiences and feelings, as well as linking it to King Herod during an RE lesson. The zones of regulations were explored through idioms and figurative language.
