Points of Geometry

We are developing medium-term plans demonstrating the progression of core knowledge (substantive) and skills (disciplinary) that pupils will acquire in their study of Maths in each year group. The medium-term plans will map out the learning journey of pupils including their ready-to-progress criteria and learning outcomes. They will have child-friendly targets and be used to guide the learning journey of all pupils and support consistency between year groups.

Understandings Doubled - EYFS

The children in Reception have been extending their knowledge of numbers by doubling. They have used songs to enhance their learning as well as using practical resources. Some of the children have moved to using a more abstract form of recording their understanding.

Lining Up Numbers - KS1

In KS1, children have been consolidating their knowledge of addition in a variety of ways before moving to subtraction. They have used a range of manipulatives to support their understanding including, counters, compare bears, dominoes, number lines, part - part whole models and the bar model. Children have also applied their understanding t being able to solve simple word problems.

Move, Rotate, Translate - LKS2

Y4 have been using their knowledge of column addition to solve reasoning problems and are now moving on to focus on their 4 x and 8 x tables, cementing their understanding of number. Y5 have begun looking at shapes and how they translate when moved, rotated or reflected on a squared grid, in preparation for more challenging geometrical problems.

Preparing for SATs - UKS2

Continuing our focus on place value and decimal fractions, we have been using our knowledge of decimals to solve problems involving length, mass and capacity. We have also implemented a ‘99 club’ mental arithmetic challenge to increase speed and accuracy across the key arithmetical knowledge required for the Y6 SATs paper.
