Clever Constructors
The areas of curriculum shown in the photos are design and make. The photos show the students developing their own ideas and designs across different subject areas and then selecting materials they want to use to carry out their plan. This supports the intent above as it demonstrates strong cross curricular links.
Brilliant Body-Builders - EYFS
In the early years, the nursery class is exploring the human body. They are engaging in singing songs, dancing, creating skeleton models, and using language to identify various body parts. In this photo, the children are assembling a 'Robot.' We used language to identify the different ways of attaching the body parts, such as ‘Can you clip the neck and the shoulders together? Or ‘How can we attach the legs to the body?’
Faithful Constructions - KS1
In Year 1, students are exploring the topic of Christianity and the concept of giving during their Religious Education lessons. They discussed places of worship for Christians and looked at various churches and cathedrals in London. The children identified different geometric shapes within the structures, focusing on the square pyramid and the cuboid. They used 2D shapes to make 3D shapes that stand freely. Working collaboratively in groups, with guidance from adults, they constructed these shapes with art straws.
Cool Croc Constructions - LKS2
The children in year 4 are making snapping crocodiles to learn how levers work. The project uses levers and linkages to demonstrate how simple machines generate movement. The split pins act as pivot points for the cardboard components, allowing students to see how moving one handle causes the crocodile to "snap." The children understand how levers change the direction and magnitude of force. The children will be able to apply this understanding in the design and making of Christmas cards.
Building a Safe Place - UKS2
In Year 6, students expand their understanding of freestanding structures and materials. They practice using various types of joints. Additionally, they research different types of bomb shelters used during World War II. Their project involves designing and constructing a model, which will then be evaluated by their team and classmates. The focus is on creating a product that meets specific design criteria.
