Cultures of Creativity
Starting in Reception, our pupils are immediately exposed to a wide range of artistic mediums. Coupled with the explicit teaching of foundational skills and inspiration drawn from the work of famous artists, this approach is designed to systematically build confidence in our young learners. This early, guided exposure ensures that when children are asked to independently experiment with different mediums, they feel equipped and encouraged to "have a go" and express their creativity without hesitation.
We completed an art project in Summer 2 2025 and our artwork was displayed in West Greenwich Library over the summer holidays which was a fantastic opportunity for our school and our children.
Chinese Celebration Creativity - EYFS
In Reception, the pupils have been getting creative by making vibrant lanterns to celebrate Chinese New Year. This photograph celebrates a pupil’s final piece, beautifully reflecting the bright red and gold decorations that are so significant in Chinese culture. To create these, the children practiced their fine motor skills by carefully folding, cutting, and joining materials, as well as using their expressive arts skills to choose colours and textures that represent a cultural celebration.
St. Paul’s Cathedral - KS1
Our Art curriculum often integrates closely with our History studies. In Year 2, pupils have been learning about the Great Fire of London, with the iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral featuring prominently in their work. This artwork celebrates a pupil’s delight at the cathedral's post-fire reconstruction, highlighting its unique features through intricate lines and varied textures. In line with Year 2 expectations.
Henri Rousseau - LKS2
In Year 3, pupils created vibrant rainforest art inspired by the "naive" style of Henri Rousseau. This photograph celebrates a child’s unique perspective and their ability to recreate Rousseau's lush, layered aesthetic through careful color mixing and textured brushwork. By experimenting with these techniques, the pupils successfully met Year 3 art expectations, demonstrating improved control and a growing mastery of painting to bring the jungle canopy to life.
Art of Histories Unforgotten - UKS2
In Year 6, pupils have been exploring the historical art of the Kingdom of Benin, specifically focusing on the intricate portraits of the Oba (the King) and the world-famous Benin Bronzes. This photograph celebrates a pupil’s own perspective of a bronze head through the medium of pencil sketching. To create this piece, the pupil practiced shading and hatching to mimic the metallic texture of the bronze, while using fine-line detail to capture the decorative coral beads and regalia worn by the King.
