Build it, Fix it

The areas of curriculum shown in the photos are design and make. The photos show the students developing their own ideas and designs across different subject areas and then selecting materials they want to use to carry out their plan. This supports the intent above as it demonstrates strong cross curricular links.

Fables on Fabrication Follies - EYFS

Using the well-known story of The Three Little Pigs made the design challenge relatable and exciting Reception. In pairs and individually, the children chose which material they wished to explore; straw, lollipop sticks or ‘bricks’ (a thicker card). They used glue, tape and scissors to construct the building. As a class, they shared their understanding and tested which materials are strong and which are weak.

Carts from the Hearts - KS1

The children will make a spring cart to carry a gift of daffodils to their parents or carers. They needed to consider the different types of wheel - plastic, milk bottles or wooden; the different axle and the length – straw or doweling; and the different type of box – different dimensions and sizes. As a class, we made a version of a cart together and spoke about the different features of Spring time. The children drew their design, showing the decorations and if the cart was tall or shallow.

Packaging for the Amazons - LKS2

The children have designed bags that are suited for the rainforest. The children talked about the size, shape, functionality and material of a variety of bags. They concluded that the material most suited for the rainforest is water-resistant and easily dryable.  The teacher showed how a paper bag is made from a 2D pattern. Together the children made suggestions for a travel pouch pattern and used this to cut the fabric for a mock –up. They used a running stitch to attach the two sides together.

Classy Chassis - UKS2

Year 6 children were taught to build a sturdy chassis (base) using materials like wood or thick cardboard. The children used a variety of materials and tools to integrate functional components such as wheels, axles, and pulley systems to ensure smooth movement. This was a cross curricular project with science. They enjoyed testing their cars out to see how fast and far they ran.
